An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has affected roughly 89 passengers and 2 crew members on the Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas cruise ship. The CDC is investigating the cause and implementing containment measures.

Nearly 100 people aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise have fallen ill with a gastrointestinal illness, prompting an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ). The outbreak has affected approximately 89 passengers out of the 2,164 on board the Radiance of the Seas. Only two of the 910 crew members have reported symptoms.

While the CDC hasn't identified the specific type of gastrointestinal illness causing the outbreak, victims have reported experiencing diarrhea and vomiting. The Radiance of the Seas embarked on a seven-day voyage from Tampa, Florida on February 1st, making stops in Mexico, Honduras, and Belize before returning to the U.S. on Saturday. The CDC was notified of the outbreak on Tuesday and promptly initiated its Vessel Sanitation Program response. The program tracks illness outbreaks on cruise ships, and in this case, it has isolated the affected passengers and crew members from the rest of the ship's population. The CDC is also taking additional measures, including increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, as well as collecting stool specimens for testing to identify the causative agent. The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program has reported several outbreaks on cruise ships this year, with norovirus often being the culprit. Norovirus, sometimes referred to as the 'cruise ship virus,' is responsible for more than 90% of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on these vessels. However, outbreaks can occur anywhere, and while they are more common during cooler months, they are not exclusive to cruise ships. The CDC is diligently working to identify the source of the current outbreak and implement the necessary measures to prevent further spread and protect the health of passengers and crew
