Funeral services for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will take place in Washington, D.C. starting January 7th. The public can pay their respects at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda and a national funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.

Funeral services for former United States President Jimmy Carter will take place in Washington, D.C. starting on January 7th. On Tuesday, President Carter's remains and family are expected to arrive at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland from Georgia at 2:15 p.m. They will then travel by motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial and the U.S. Capitol. At 4:30 p.m., President Carter's body will be carried into the Rotunda, where members of Congress will pay their respects.

Major road closures are anticipated in Washington D.C. next week due to the funeral. The public will have an opportunity to pay their respects at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda from 7 a.m. on Wednesday until 7 a.m. on January 9th. On Thursday, President Carter's remains will depart the U.S. Capitol at 9 a.m. and travel to the Washington National Cathedral for a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. followed by the National Funeral Services at 10 a.m. Afterwards, President Carter and his family will return to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, before departing for Georgia. The U.S. Capitol Police are advising those who wish to attend the public viewing to dress for the cold weather and be aware of the following restrictions: Flowers, sealed envelopes, or other offerings will not be allowed into the U.S. Capitol or Capitol Visitor Center. Photography and electronic recording will not be permitted while visitors are in the Rotunda. Bags exceeding 18 inches wide x 14 inches high x 8.5 inches deep are prohibited. Weapons, including but not limited to blackjacks, slingshots, sand clubs, sandbags, knuckles, electric stun guns, knives of any size, razors, box cutters, martial arts weapons, or devices, are not allowed. Staff may possess knives with blades 3 inches or less. Pointed objects, including but not limited to knitting needles, letter openers, and other pointed objects deemed a possible threat, are prohibited. Pens and pencils are permitted
