Government funding has reduced planned healthcare cuts on the Isle of Man, but cancellations of non-urgent procedures have still caused concern for patients and MHKs.

An additional £800,000 in government funding has led to a reduction in planned healthcare cuts on the Isle of Man. Manx Care , the island's health provider, had initially proposed canceling all non-urgent procedures, leaving patients in uncertainty about their treatment timelines. Joney Faragher MHK, a member of the Legislative Council, expressed concern that constituents had been left 'extremely worried' about their health issues due to the lack of clarity surrounding the cancellations.

Health Minister Claire Christian acknowledged the delay in publicly releasing details about the cuts but emphasized that her department had been actively working to secure funding to mitigate the impact. She explained that her department requested a postponement of the planned release of the cuts list in mid-January to allow for further discussions on the consequences of the proposals, including the potential cancellation of all elective surgery on the island. These initial proposals were unveiled by former health minister Lawrie Hooper MHK, who asserted that releasing them was in the 'public interest'. Subsequently, the Treasury made an additional £800,000 available to Manx Care, enabling a reduction in some of the previously planned reductions in on-island procedures. Faragher criticized the lack of communication regarding the proposed cuts, stating that it had 'left people in a limbo situation' and created an 'information vacuum' that was 'unforgivable'. She deemed the plans 'incredibly irresponsible and short-sighted' and warned that 'someone will have to pick up that tab in future'. The cancellation of all non-urgent procedures in Liverpool and Manchester until March 31st were also confirmed.
