Fort Bend ISD administrators are mulling a tax ratification election to remedy the school district's $46.8 million budget shortfall.

Trustees listen during the Fort Bend Independent School District school board meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019 in Sugar Land.Additionally, the trustees may decide on calling a possible bond election for $1.1 billion in funds for the school district.

"A lot of factors impact budget — property value growth, inflation and lower student growth," FBISD deputy superintendent Steve Bassett said."We adopted a budget with a $47 million deficit without the use of ESSER."The child nutrition budget is $36 million. There will be a 75-cent increase in the price of students' breakfast and a 25-cent increase in the price of students' lunch.

FBISD Finance Director Bryan Guinn explained three different scenarios within a VATRE that would result in varying outcomes for the district. The VATRE would keep FBISD’s tax rate the same, or raise it depending on the scenario recommended. If approved, the district will be able to lower the deficit while improving compensation for teachers and staff.

The annual tax bill of residents with a property with an average taxable value of $291,266 would rise by $28 per month . The school district's capital requirements include new school buildings, renovations, and safety and security upgrades, according to the assessment report.
