A fatal shooting in downtown Anchorage Wednesday night is still under investigation by police, highlighting a growing problem for some people of a downtown that is not as safe or welcoming as it once was.

“We are committed to maintaining secure environments at our facilities through comprehensive security measures, including surveillance and access control systems, as well as dedicated staffing,” Melinda Gant, the external affairs director for ACDA, said. “Despite these efforts, we are devastated that this isolated incident occurred within our premises.

“Our main income are tourists,” Matthew Therrien, an Anchorage resident, said. “Our history states that if we don’t have tourism, we don’t exist, we won’t prosper.” Tour operator Carl Johnson is also concerned about how safety issues will affect the future of tourism in Anchorage. He said it’s common to hear his clients share their safety concerns with him.
