The coalition sent a letter to federal agencies seeking enforcement of laws, new environmental impact review
An environmental group is petitioning federal agencies to halt launches of SpaceX’s Starship from South Texas until impacts on its surroundings are better understood. The Center for Biological Diversity, a Tucson -based nonprofit, sent a letter to the Department of the Interior, its subordinate agency the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Aviation Administration requesting the denial of launches pending further review under the National Environmental Policy Act .
With SpaceX’s revised Starship launch plans under FAA review, next flight could be delayed The request comes as the commercial space company is aiming to launch the massive Starship from its Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach as soon as the first week of August. The launch is awaiting an updated license from the FAA to potentially allow it to land Starship’s first stage booster back at its launch tower.
SpaceX’s Starship launch damaged shorebird nests, environmental survey finds He said Fish and Wildlife Service investigations “can take a long time” depending on the resources the agency puts into it. The larger question, he said, is what the agency, along with the Department of Justice, will do with the findings.
With SpaceX HQ on the way, Texas Space Commission is looking to attract more space business to state The FAA’s initial environmental assessment, completed in June 2022, said Starship would have “no significant impact” on its surroundings. Since then, the agency has updated its findings with two written reevaluations but Glitzenstein said that’s not enough.
Elon Musk says he’s moving SpaceX and X headquarters to Texas from California The Department of the Interior declined to comment, but a spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the agency is committed to working with SpaceX on recommendations to reduce impacts and comply with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The FAA and SpaceX are already embroiled in multiple lawsuits regarding beach closures and the federal review processes that allowed frequent launches from a wildlife preserve.
