Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman speaks at a press conference following the death of a detention officer, on Dec. 17, 2024.A detention officer at the Ellis County jail died Monday while on the job after an inmate “physically assaulted” him, police say.
“It was a heinous, horrific, purposeful murder,” Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman said in a Tuesday news conference to describe the act of a jail inmate Monday afternoon that claimed the life of 28-year-old detention officer Isaiah Patrick Bias.At about 3:45 p.m., Ellis County heriff’s ffice personnel responded to an incident in the Wayne McCollum Detention Center, or Ellis County jail, about a detention officer being assaulted by an inmate, Norman said.
Because the incident is still being investigated by the Texas Rangers, Norman said the department is limited in the details it can share about the incident. However, he said Bias was “physically assaulted” by the inmate, identified as 45-year-old Arron Semeion Thompson from Ennis, in the holding area, and it was a “horrific account.”Thompson was held in a segregated area for 23 hours a day and was only allowed out of his cell for one hour.
Officials said Thompson had been in Ellis County jail since early last month on three counts of assault on a public servant in addition to evading arrest. Since the incident, he is no longer being held in Ellis County jail, however. While it is up to the district attorney’s office on whether or not the death penalty is sought in this case, Norman said “if he has anything to say about it, that’s exactly what will happen.” He said Thompson should receive the death penalty because Bias’ murder was “horrific, senseless and not needed.”“ loved what he did. He loved his people he worked with, and everybody around him loved him,” Norman said.
