Officer Isaiah Bias was fatally assaulted by an inmate at the Ellis County jail. The suspect, Aaron Thompson, has been charged with capital murder.
An Ellis County detention officer died on Monday after being assaulted by an inmate. Sheriff Brad Norman said 28-year-old Officer Isaiah Bias was physically assaulted by an inmate in a holding cell at the Ellis County jail on Monday afternoon. Fellow officers rushed to his aid, but they were not able to save him. Officer Bias was taken to the hospital in Waxahachie, where he was pronounced dead. The inmate responsible was identified as 45-year-old Aaron Thompson from Ennis.
He'd been in jail since November, charged with three counts of assault on a public servant and evading arrest. He’s now charged with capital murder. He was arraigned and issued a bond of $2 million. 'Most of the time, law enforcement officers and detention officers deal with good folks having a bad day. Occasionally, we deal with bad folks. I can honestly say that my staff over the last day has dealt with pure evil,' Sheriff Norman said. The sheriff said he’s known Officer Bias since he was about 14 years old. That’s when he joined the department’s Explorers program for teens and young adults. Bias worked at the sheriff’s office for about a year in 2016 before leaving to attend Navarre College. He returned to the department in 2019 as a detention officer and has worked there ever since. 'He was a very family-oriented person. His sister’s baby is a week old, and he was able to see the baby the day it was born,' Sheriff Norman said. 'Everybody here that worked with him in the jail loved him. He was one of the kind of guys if you needed help, he’d come help you. Outstanding. Outstanding person.' What’s Next: Sheriff Norman said the Texas Rangers will be conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly assault. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with that investigation to ensure justice is served, the sheriff said
