Did the virus originate in a lab or emerge as a spillover from nature? There's no proof either way. But experts dug themselves in on one side or the other.

Kirby emphasized that there is no consensus among the intelligence community about the origins of the virus following reporting that the Department of Energy determined it likely stemmed from a lab leak in Wuhan.

The lab-leak proponents, by contrast, tended to leap on the DOE announcement as confirmation. Jamie Metzl, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and a former official at the State Department and National Security Council, has been outspoken about the need to investigate a lab leak.
