Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has saved $729 million by cancelling numerous controversial foreign aid programs, sparking debate about the allocation of taxpayer funds.
The Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) has halted millions of U.S. tax dollars from being allocated to unconventional overseas programs. The watchdog initiative, led by Elon Musk , revealed a total of $729 million in savings achieved by canceling these programs.
Among the projects discontinued were a $10 million allocation for voluntary medical male circumcisions in Mozambique, $14 million for improving public procurement in Serbia, $29 million for strengthening the political landscape in Bangladesh, $47 million for improving learning outcomes in Asia, and $14 million for social cohesion in Mali. DOGE also reported that the federal government had been set to provide $9.7 million to the University of California, Berkeley to develop entrepreneurial skills in a cohort of Cambodian youth, along with an additional $2.3 million for strengthening independent voices in Cambodia. A further $40 million was earmarked for a gender equality and women empowerment hub, and a staggering $486 million was allocated to the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening. This included $22 million for inclusive and participatory political processes in Moldova and $21 million for voter turnout in India. The announcement sparked widespread concern and criticism, with individuals like former U.S. Department of Energy nuclear scientist Matt Van Swol expressing alarm over the extent of funds directed to foreign nations while domestic infrastructure faced challenges. Van Swol also raised allegations of illegal use of taxpayer dollars for abortions in Mozambique through PEPFAR (the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) under the Biden administration's CDC, citing a breach of the Helms Amendment, which prohibits U.S. foreign aid funding for abortions abroad
