The township zoning hearing board previously denied a special exception to the zoning code. But, the operator of the drug treatment center presented a more scaled-back proposal to the board on Thursday night.
Soar Corp Recovery Center plans to transform the Red Lion Hotel Harrisburg Hershey at 4751 Lindle Road in Swatara Township into a treatment center that would include a 220-bed inpatient substance abuse facility. Daniel Urie | [email protected] Township’s zoning hearing board approved a special exception to the zoning code on Thursday evening by a 2-1 vote that will allow an inpatient drug treatment center to take over the Red Lion Hotel Harrisburg Hershey.
More than two dozen people showed up for the hearing Thursday. Many of those people who stayed until the end of the hearing at about 11:45 p.m. were in attendance for about five hours. Two hearings were scheduled to start at 7 p.m. An unrelated hearing lasted for about an hour. The hearing for Soar Corp. lasted about three hours followed by about 40 minutes of deliberation.
“My heart tells me there is a need here in our society and that we need to fix this and be a part of this. But, my head tells me this is not the right location and there is a better place out there that is perhaps more rural,” he said. Michael Amideo of Soar Corp. said there are about $200,000 in delinquent taxes on the property. He said his company would pay them off. Amideo says his company plans to spend about $14 million on renovations. He said the facility plans to employ about 350 people when it is running at full capacity. He hopes to hire many of the hotel employees who work in housekeeping, maintenance and in the kitchen.
The facility is situated on a 12-acre property. It has a number of conference rooms, and indoor and outdoor pools. Geoff Botak, president of Malvern Health said the outdoor pool and space would not be used. And officials were still looking into whether or not to use the indoor pool.
