Blue Ridge Beef is recalling thousands of pounds of dog food after samples tested positive for salmonella. The recall affects products sold in multiple states.
Blue Ridge Beef is voluntarily recalling 5,700 pounds of its two-pound bags of Natural Mix dog food due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall affects products sold in eight states: Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Rhode Island. The products were sold between January 3rd and January 24th in retail stores.
The recall was initiated after samples collected on January 8th tested positive for salmonella bacteria by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection Laboratory.Salmonella can cause serious health risks in both pets and humans. In pets, symptoms can include diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. Pets infected with salmonella can also spread the bacteria to other animals and humans. Anyone who notices their pet experiencing these symptoms after consuming the recalled product is urged to contact their veterinarian immediately. The FDA also advises that anyone who handled the affected dog food without thoroughly washing their hands or touched surfaces exposed to the product could potentially become infected with salmonella. Human infection can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, and in severe cases, it can result in more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. The FDA strongly recommends that anyone who purchased the recalled product returns it to the place of purchase or disposes of it in a way that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife. It is also crucial to avoid feeding the product to other animals or donating it. All pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers should be thoroughly washed and sanitized
