Austin City Manager, TC Broadnax, is tasked with choosing Austin's next police chief.
Tuesday night, Broadnax presented the two finalists to the public, where they laid out their priorities if they were to get the position.Jeffrey Norman , the second finalist, added, "We gotta build relationships, we gotta be out there and talk to anybody and everybody." Community members Tuesday wondered if she could handle the size difference.
In response, Davis said, "We have 3 professional sports teams, we do all the demonstrations, we have a university and major corporations there." She added, "I understand what it means to be dedicated to that type of policing when you're dealing with people and crowds."According to a report last month, MPD has 330 officer vacancies.
Norman laid out his recruitment plan to help fill officer positions, "Tap into your community and say, 'Hey help us out.' The best recruiters, are us," he continued.Data shows response times have increased in the last four years since APD hit an alarming number of officer vacancies. Salas said she has felt those effects. After walking her dog one night earlier this year, a man followed Salas to her home in south Austin."I called 911 and I let them know, there's a guy standing across my street from my home, he's staring into my home and I'm really scared, 'can someone come and come check this out for me?'" Salas said.Salas said she liked what she heard from both candidates and hopes this could be the start of an improved chapter with APD.
