Austin is in the final stage of picking a new permanent police chief. The two finalists are visiting the city this week and holding a meet-and-greet with the pu
blic on Tuesday night. The candidates are Lisa Davis , the Assistant Chief for the Cincinnati Police Department , and Jeffrey Norman , the Chief of Police in Milwaukee.
Earlier on Tuesday, CBS Austin got the opportunity to do the same. We asked the candidates for top cop about three critical issues facing the department. This year the Austin Police Department is expected to graduate over 100 cadets. It is likely to be the first year since 2019 that APD has gained more officers than it has lost. Even with the growth in the police force, the department currently has 330 vacant officer positions.
“Do you have a unified message? Do you show support to those who are putting in the work? Because those messages affect recruitment and also retention,” said Milwaukee Chief of Police Jeffrey Norman.
