Aunjanue Ellis calls the actorsstrike the “haves versus the have-nots.” “There’s a lot of inequality that has to be addressed,” she tells VF's davidcanfield97.
I’m going to throw a quote back at you that you shared with me at the premiere of, that moved me and surprised me. You said, “I’m trying to accept something good without feeling like something bad is going to happen.”I still feel that way. I still fight that demon. If something is too good, I look at my phone like I’m waiting on the bad news. When is it going to happen? The reality is, sometimes it has happened like that. The week that I was nominated [for an Oscar], I lost somebody in my life.
I think it’s very standard, honestly, for someone who’s been fighting for that place in this industry for a long time. When it suddenly comes, it’s like, “Wait, is this happening for real? Is this a one-time thing?” Yeah, and the tempering of that is that there are these other things that I want equally, this other part of my creative life that I want to activate as strongly as this, and that hasn’t happened yet in the way that I would like it to. That calms me down. That keeps me calm. It’s like, “Yeah, this is great. I’m acting, but I’m still someone else’s employee, and I’m ready to be somebody’s employer.”Writing and producing. I’m nobody’s director, but writing and producing.
One thing that was really important to you back in that Oscar campaign was, essentially, going back home. You didn’t live in Hollywood, I don’t want to presume you still don’t, but how have you found that balance of life and work as things have accelerated for you? It’s never been a question. It’s never been balanced. I don’t know people like that. If they exist, they probably, I don’t know how to say it, they probably have penises. [I thought about that: “There might be a spit take on his part if I say that!” But it’s true. I was a caregiver for my mother for a very long time, and there was no such thing as balance. I had some people that were there helping me do that, so when I had to go off and work, they would take care of her.
