“Hell no, they didn’t say anything,” an education advocate told us.

about eight months ago, and the Newark Board of Education told no one.The first public acknowledgement of Roger León’s renewed contract was late on Tuesday in an email to the Star-Ledger from a district spokesperson. “In accordance with its terms, the contract automatically renewed in May,” Nancy Deering wrote. “While we do not usually comment on staff performance, of course there was a positive evaluation of his performance.

“Hell no, they didn’t say anything,” remarked Denise Cole, who says she’s very engaged in school board meetings and has put in multiple public records requests for the board’s evaluation of the superintendent’s performance, which were denied. Yet there was no conversation about whether the guy who’s been running the schools has done a good job, no opportunity for the public to weigh in. It’s unclear if even the board members themselves realized that May of 2022 was the important month in which they could put the superintendent on notice. Instead of having their own attorney to fully inform them of their options and help them hold the superintendent accountable, which is their primary function, they rely on attorney Brenda Liss, who works for León.
