An Anchorage School District charter school is taking its “off and away” phone policy this academic year to a new level, requiring students to lock their phones in pouches during school hours.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -
“If anyone has their smartphone on their person, it’s really hard not to take it out, and it’s especially hard for a 12-year-old,” school principal Adam Mokelke said. “Our teachers spent all of their time policing phones being out in class, and choosing between that and teaching.”To Ban or Not To Ban: How school systems are handling cell phones in the classroom
“They talk to each other more. There’s so much less worrying about texts and social media and posts and coordinating things and just all of that stress,” Mokelke said. “I could literally feel the anxiety level of our students coming down this year.” “We did our emergency evacuation , and we were able to get all these kids out of this building into a safe place away from the building in a matter of minutes because they’re following our directions and they’re responding immediately.”
