The Anchorage School District is now reporting nine confirmed or suspected cases of pertussis — commonly called whooping cough — that have surfaced in at least six ASD schools
ASD says it knows of 9 cases of pertussis across a half dozen schools this yearPublished: Sep. 10, 2024 at 6:24 PM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School District is now reporting nine confirmed or suspected cases of pertussis – commonly called whooping cough – that have surfaced in at least six local ASD schools, including Goldenview Middle School, South High School, Bear Valley Elementary, Rabbit Creek Elementary, Collage Gate Elementary and Aquarian Charter School.
State of Alaska Epidemiologist Joe McLaughlin wrote in an email the same day that as of last Friday, the state had seen 234 suspected or confirmed cases of whooping cough so far this year. “Once we find out they are suspected, they have to stay home,” she explained. “They have to take their antibiotics, and they can’t come back for five days until they finish their antibiotic treatment.”
Additionally, because the effectiveness of the vaccine wanes over time, authorities say even vaccinated students can still get sick and can spread the disease.
