“For those who have lost their ability to communicate due to a variety of neurological conditions, there’s a lot of hope to preserve or regain their ability to communicate with family and friends. "

The term "brain-computer interface" refers to a technology that creates a direct line of communication between the human brain and an outside object or computer system, opening up a wide range of possibilities for things like device control and neurological study.a BCI device that allows patients with significant speech and movement disabilities to regain some of the functions lost due to neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis .

So far, it has been working rather well. Patients with ALS have been reported to freely and reliably use a set of six basic commands to navigate among options on a communication board and to control smart devices like room lights and streaming TV applications by utilizing the BCI in conjunction with a specialized computer algorithm that has been trained to translate their brain signals into computer commands.

Furthermore, for the entire three-month period, there was no need for recalibration or retraining of the BCI algorithm that operated the computer interface. The system continued to function accurately over time, performing as well on Day 1 as it did on Day 90.
