Between The Matrix Resurrections, Only God Forgives, and Enter the Void, these films' attempts to be edgy ruined any chance they had at being great.
Some movies attempt to be thought-provoking, clever, and funny, only to end up trying way too hard to be edgy. Often, a genuinely edgy movie illustrates its smarts by challenging audiences with a pitch-black tone and dark humor. Most importantly, the best legitimately edgy movies don't actually try to be edgy. For example, one of the most celebrated movies that successfully pulls off its edginess is Fight Club.
9 Sucker Punch Filmmaker Zack Snyder is often accused of being too edgy, whether it's because of his constant dour tones or his insistence on making superheroes seem so unheroic. That works wonderfully for 2009's Watchmen, but that approach doesn't succeed in Snyder's 2011 follow-up Sucker Punch. Even fans are embarrassed to admit they like the movie because of how it over-sexualizes its all-women cast.
6 Swordfish In the early 2000s, there was an influx of cyberpunk movies following The Matrix. Although the cyberpunk aesthetic already existed, the Wachowski siblings' 1999 movie brought the sub-genre into the Hollywood mainstream. One of the "edgiest" and worst examples of that trend is Swordfish. The 2001 movie is about a group of thieves who can rob people by hacking into security systems.
