8 The Cloverfield Paradox With the success of their 10 Cloverfield Lane gambit, JJ Abrams and Paramount decided to pull a similar trick with The Cloverfield Paradox, which was initially sold to the studio as an original film, The God Particle. Unfortunately, the realization that the film could slot into the “Cloververse” came when the film was already in production . The subsequent script changes and reshoots left the film feeling messy and confusing.
5 Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights One of the more infamous examples of a standalone screenplay being fit into a franchise is the poorly-received Dirty Dancing sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Playwright and NPR host Peter Sagal wrote the script, originally titled Cuba Mine, as a stirring political drama about a young American woman who witnesses the Cuban Revolution and begins a romance with a young revolutionary.
