Sheriff Richard Jones promises justice for the young victim
Layla Trent , 24, is charged with felony child endangerment, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones. The sheriff says deputies went to a home on Cain Avenue in New Miami after a concerned citizen called the sheriff’s office about a security video showing apparent child abuse .
According to an incident report from the sheriff’s office, the video shows Trent “striking a child” who was in a vehicle before taking the car seat out and throwing it on the ground with the child in it. Trent then walks away for a short time before coming back and hitting the child “what appears to be in the face,” according to the report.
Detectives interviewed Trent while Butler County Children Services came to check on the children inside the Cain Avenue home. The investigation led to Trent’s arrest and the one-year-old victim and other children being left in their father’s care, the sheriff said.
“We have a duty to protect innocent children who cannot protect themselves,” said Sheriff Jones. “Anyone who abuses a child should understand there will be serious consequences. We will aggressively pursue justice for this child and for any child suffering from abuse. This kind of behavior is sickening, and it will not be tolerated in Butler County.
