The Philadelphia Union are on the verge of breaking their transfer record with the imminent signing of 22-year-old Uruguayan striker Bruno Damiani from Nacional. Damiani will join a competitive attacking lineup and potentially become a designated player due to his age.
The Philadelphia Union are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign 22-year-old Uruguayan striker Bruno Damiani from Nacional , a move that would shatter the club's transfer record . A source familiar with the negotiations revealed to The Inquirer on Tuesday that the Union are in advanced talks to acquire Damiani for a fee of $3.4 million, surpassing the previous record set by Mikael Uhre's signing three years ago.
While the agreement is not yet finalized, emerging reports in South America suggest the transfer is progressing rapidly. If the deal is completed, Damiani will join the ranks of current strikers Mikael Uhre and Tai Baribo, vying for a starting position. He will also become a designated player, aligning with Uhre and Dániel Gazdag. However, Damiani will benefit from a reduced salary cap hit due to his age, as designated players under 23 years old are permitted a lower salary of $200,000. The Union previously utilized this mechanism when acquiring Jovan Lukić and Dániel Gazdag as winter acquisitions.Damiani's experience includes stints at Nacional, one of Uruguay's most prominent clubs, and Boston River, another Uruguayan team, where he spent the 2024 season on loan. During his time at Boston River, he demonstrated impressive scoring prowess, netting 12 goals and providing five assists in 38 appearances. Notably, he shared the field with Union forward prospect José Riasco, who was also on loan at Boston River last year. Damiani has also represented Uruguay's national team once, participating in a friendly match against Costa Rica last year. The Union are actively looking to strengthen their defense and are rumored to be pursuing a starting center back before the 2025 season commences on February 22nd against Orlando City. Their final preseason game is scheduled for Friday against CF Montréal in suburban Orlando, followed by a week of training back in Chester before the competitive matches begin
