A Millwall supporter is continuing his late father's legacy by launching a prostate cancer awareness campaign at a Championship match, emphasizing the importance of early detection and encouraging men to get tested.

Will Kilgannon, a 22-year-old Millwall supporter from New Cross, south-east London, is honoring his late father by reviving his prostate cancer awareness campaign. Ten years after his father, Brian Kilgannon, passed away, Will is stepping up to continue the vital work his father started alongside Prostate Cancer UK. Brian, a lifelong Millwall fan, passionately campaigned to raise awareness of prostate cancer within the football community.

Will is now taking center stage in a campaign film that will be showcased during Millwall's Championship match against Preston on Saturday. This initiative aims to educate and encourage men to prioritize their health and seek early detection.\Will speaks fondly of his father's influence, stating, 'My dad was a really important part of my life and a very inspirational man that I really look up to and try to emulate as much as possible, and try to continue in his footsteps.' Football matches, Will believes, offer an excellent platform to disseminate this crucial message, considering the predominantly male demographic of the audience. The scale of the problem is substantial, with over 63,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer annually in England alone – a figure exceeding the capacity of Millwall's home ground, The Den, by a significant margin. The campaign's core objective is to motivate men to consult their GPs about their risk of prostate cancer, undergo check-ups, and get tested. Will's personal experience underscores the urgency of early detection. 'Prostate cancer is a curable disease. But my dad, he left it too late, he ignored the symptoms, and it spread outside the prostate, and therefore became incurable,' he explained. This poignant narrative highlights the critical importance of proactive health management and regular screenings.\Prostate Cancer UK has expressed its support for Will's efforts, emphasizing the disease's prevalence in England as the most common cancer among men and its distinction as the only major cancer without a formal screening program. A spokesperson from Prostate Cancer UK highlighted the insidious nature of prostate cancer, noting that it often presents no symptoms in its early, more treatable stages. Therefore, they stress the importance of every man understanding his personal risk factors. Risk factors include age (over 50), ethnicity (Black men are at higher risk), and family history (having a father or brother with the disease increases risk). The campaign's goal is to empower men with knowledge, encouraging them to initiate conversations with their healthcare providers and take the necessary steps for early detection and treatment. The campaign's presence at the Millwall match serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of this disease and the potential to save lives through awareness and proactive healthcare choices.
