A two-year-old child is in critical condition after falling several metres on board the Mein Schiff 7 cruise ship while docked in Funchal, Madeira. Emergency services responded quickly, and an investigation is underway.
A harrowing incident unfolded this morning in Funchal , Madeira , as a two-year-old child is currently battling for survival following a fall from a significant height aboard the cruise ship Mein Schiff 7 .
The child, whose nationality remains undisclosed, sustained serious injuries after falling several metres, estimated by Portuguese press to be between 10 and 13 feet. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, providing immediate stabilization before transporting the toddler to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital. The circumstances surrounding the fall are currently under investigation, with authorities launching an internal inquiry to determine the sequence of events that led to this tragic accident.
The Mein Schiff 7, a relatively new vessel launched in 2024 and flagged in Malta, was docked in Funchal as part of a seven-day cruise that commenced in Gran Canaria on April 20th. The ship boasts a substantial capacity, carrying nearly 3,000 passengers and over 1,000 crew members. The cruise is scheduled to conclude its journey back in Gran Canaria next Monday. The response to the incident was rapid and coordinated.
Upon receiving the initial alarm, Red Cross personnel and a specialized rapid intervention medical team were immediately dispatched to board the ship and provide critical care. The Administration of the Ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira confirmed the incident, stating that the child was transported to the hospital’s emergency department following the event which occurred within the ship’s designated jurisdiction.
While the port authorities acknowledged the incident, they refrained from releasing specific details regarding the child’s age, nationality, or the precise nature of the fall, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation. The statement emphasized the activation of the Regional Integrated Medical Emergency System and the on-site support provided by the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR).
The Mein Schiff 7 had arrived in Funchal as the first of two cruise ships scheduled to visit the port on Wednesday, bringing a total of nearly 4,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members to the island. The ship was scheduled for a 38-hour stay, including an overnight visit, before departing for La Palma on Thursday afternoon.
The arrival of the Mein Schiff 7 was initially announced by Funchal Port officials on social media, highlighting the economic boost provided by the influx of cruise passengers. The vessel originated from Las Palmas and is operating as part of the Cruise Atlantic Islands (CAI) itinerary. This visit marked the final scheduled call to Madeira for the season, with a planned return in November.
However, the celebratory tone of the port’s announcement was quickly overshadowed by the gravity of the incident involving the young child. Medical sources at Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital have indicated that the toddler’s injuries are extremely severe, and the child remains in a critical condition. The focus now remains on providing the best possible medical care and supporting the child’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
The investigation will aim to establish a clear understanding of how the fall occurred and whether any safety protocols were breached. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with travel, particularly for young children, and the importance of stringent safety measures on cruise ships and in port environments
