Massés Sports Bar & Grill, a Walnut Creek institution for over 30 years, is reopening in a new downtown location after closing its North Main Street location in February. The new location will be at 1411 Locust St.

Massés Sports Bar & Grill , located for more than 30 years on Walnut Creek ’s North Main Street, will reopened in a new location in the heart of downtown. For more than 30 years, the owners of Massés Sports Bar & Grill managed to turn it into a Walnut Creek destination for Super Bowl parties, billiards and other kinds of fun, despite its less-than-central location — a former hardware store on a stretch of North Main Street better known for car dealerships and self-storage facilities.Philz Coffee draws ire from Bay Area LGBTQ districts over Pride flags Now, Massés fans can look forward to the return of the beloved watering hole, following its closure in February, in a desirable new location in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek .“We’ve got some work to do!” the siblings announced on Facebook. “But we’re excited to share our next chapter with you as we announce- our new home at 1411 Locust St. Walnut Creek ! @walnutcreekdowntown #staytuned” The siblings didn’t say when they plan to open Massés on Locust Street, though it looks as though they have a bit of rehabbing to do. Massés Sports Bar & Grill used to be located at 2721 North Main Street in Walnut Creek .

Their parents, Maury and Christine Paden, first opened Massés as a billiards hall and sports bar in 1994, turning it into the go-to place for nachos, wings, family- and late-night gatherings and viewing parties for all kinds of sports. The siblings took over in 2013. When they learned that they couldn’t stay in the building, due to a planned new development, they vowed, “we’re not going away,” when they had to announce in February that they had to leave their North Main Street location.

They are moving into a building that has a somewhat storied history in the Walnut Creek nightlife scene. Many longtime residentsthat it once housed the Refectory, a restaurant with an old-castle dining room feel that counted for fine dining in the East Bay suburbs in the 1970s. Residents recall that the building transformed at some point into Abernathy’s, an Irish pub, followed by a series of bars and dance clubs that didn’t necessarily have the best reputations. In November 2024, the city’s Planning Commissionheld by the operators of Dia y Noche, an eating and drinking establishment. City officials said the bar had been the subject of nearly 60 calls for police service in an 11-month period, due to complaints about noise, public intoxication and serving alcohol outside the permitted hours.

For Paden and Barrett, this new location means they’ll have to downsize from the 10,000-square-foot North Main Street space to around 3,200 square feet, according to the property listing. Massésthat it was a “large, family-friendly venue,” with more than 40 TVs, 10 pool tables and room to host bocce ball and shuffleboard. But if even Paden and Barrett have to make do with less space, their patrons are happy that their business will be back, as they shared on Facebook. They joked about having to deal with downtown parking, which wasn’t an issue at the old place. “Congratulations and even closer to me where I can walk home if needed!!” one person wrote. “Yeah, can’t wait!!”Iconic rock group returns to Bay Area for 1st time in over 12 yearsSwalwell’s rapid exit scrambles California governor’s race, reshaping path to NovemberHarriette Cole: My child's birthday party went wrong in so many waysBritney Spears teased peek at nipples in dance video before rehab news
