The actor, best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Desperate Housewives, shared a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram, describing his mother as a woman full of love, glamour, mischief, kindness, and joy. He revealed that he and his husband Scott were still on a plane when they received the news, and he missed being by her side in her final moments.
His father was holding her hand as she took her last breath, with his brother beside her, and his sister having spent precious weeks with her before saying goodbye over the phone. Despite the distance at the exact moment of passing, Barrowman noted that upon arriving home, he lay beside her, talked to her, and softly sang their special song in her ear. He expressed gratitude that she left the world peacefully and surrounded by the people she loved most.
In his tribute, Barrowman reflected on his mother's vibrant personality, noting that many fans knew her through the stories he shared over the years or had met her at tours and conventions where she would proudly stand beside the stage watching him perform. She adored the sparkle, laughter, music, and especially the fans. Barrowman credited his mother for giving him his voice, humor, love of performing, and joy for life.
He praised her fierce love for family, sharing a poignant memory: when he and Scott married in Cardiff and someone warned there could be protests, his mother simply said, 'Let them try; I'll batter them with my Chanel handbag.
' For the last two and a half years, Barrowman and his husband had the privilege of caring for both his parents in their home, supported by a dedicated nurse and caregiver named Maria, whose compassion and devotion lifted the family every day. Due to this loss, Barrowman has canceled upcoming shows to be with his family.
The news of his mother's death comes just four months after Barrowman announced the passing of his beloved dog, Captain Jack Harkness, who died peacefully in his arms at the age of 18. The Scottish-American actor had sobbed as he revealed that the pet had waited until he got home to say goodbye.
These personal tragedies follow a difficult period for Barrowman, who has struggled to find work since being accused of exposing himself to co-workers on the set of Doctor Who and Torchwood between 2005 and 2011.
