Four candidates seeking to replace Senator Maria Elena Durazo in California’s 26th Senate District addressed Eastside residents, focusing on concerns related to immigration, public health, affordable housing, and environmental justice. The forum highlighted the candidates’ diverse backgrounds and proposed solutions to pressing community challenges.
A recent forum held by Proyecto Pastoral brought together four candidates vying to succeed Senator Maria Elena Durazo in California’s 26th Senate District. The event, attended by approximately 60 Eastside residents, provided a platform for Juan Camacho, Wendy Carrillo, Sara Hernandez, and Sarah Rascón to address critical issues facing the community.
Concerns surrounding immigration, public health, and environmental justice dominated the discussion, reflecting the priorities of the constituents in Boyle Heights and East LA. Senator Durazo is concluding her term and is now campaigning for a seat on the LA County Board of Supervisors, currently held by Hilda Solis, who is term-limited. The forum aimed to give residents a direct opportunity to hear from potential representatives about their plans for the district.
The candidates each presented their perspectives on key challenges and proposed solutions. Affordable housing emerged as a significant concern, with residents like Martha Martinez expressing anxieties about the high rental costs burdening her children. The legacy of the Exide Technologies plant and its environmental impact also drew attention, highlighting the need for remediation and preventative measures.
On the topic of immigration, all candidates demonstrated a commitment to protecting immigrant communities from federal enforcement and securing state funding to support housing stability. They discussed strategies ranging from expanding ‘safe zone’ doctrines to challenging federal actions perceived as detrimental to immigrant rights. Camacho, Carrillo, Hernandez and Rascón all emphasized the importance of proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of vulnerable populations.
The discussion also touched upon the potential loss of healthcare coverage for some immigrant groups due to cuts in the Medi-Cal program, with candidates proposing progressive taxation as a means to offset these funding shortfalls. Each candidate brought a unique background and experience to the discussion. Juan Camacho, President of Equality California Institute, focused on LGBTQ+ civil rights and youth leadership. Wendy Carrillo, a former State Assemblymember for the 52nd district, highlighted her prior service to the Eastside.
Sara Hernandez, a trustee on the Los Angeles Community College District Board, emphasized her expertise in housing, immigration, and environmental law. Sarah Rascón, who recently served as Director of County and Regional Affairs for Mayor Karen Bass, underscored her work in bringing social services and mental health resources to the community. The candidates detailed specific initiatives, such as Rascón’s efforts to secure Prop 1 funding for mental health services and Hernandez’s proposal to expand ‘safe zone’ protections.
Camacho and Carrillo both pledged to continue advocating for increased resources in the state budget. The forum provided a valuable opportunity for Eastside residents to assess the candidates’ qualifications and determine who best represents their interests as the race for the 26th Senate District unfolds
