The Washington State Department of Transportation has set Monday, March 31, as the final day for removal to avoid a $137 fine.Automotive centers are expected to be busy the weekend before the deadline, prompting WSDOT to advise travelers to plan ahead. Studded tires are permitted in Washington from November 1 to March 31, with no exceptions or "out of state waivers" allowed.While Washington and Oregon share the same removal deadline, other states may have different regulations. All drivers, including visitors, must adhere to Washington's motor vehicle laws. State law allows WSDOT to extend the deadline if necessary, but current forecasts do not indicate a need for an extension. For those traveling in mountainous areas, WSDOT recommends using approved traction tires and carrying chains. WSDOT crews will continue to monitor weather and road conditions and respond to any spring snow. "Studded tires cause between $20 million to $29 million in damage to Washington's state-owned roads each winter, in addition to damaging city and county roads," said WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin in a press release. "There are many alternative traction options available. We encourage drivers to consider non-stud, winter-tread tires, which provide excellent traction without the road damage caused by metal studs."
