China neighbor to introduce kamikaze drones, low-cost missiles with 620-mile range

Tokyo is reportedly planning air, sea, and submarine-launched kamikaze drones in a new integrated warfare concept.

Japan has announced plans to raise a fleet of loitering kamikaze drones and low-cost missiles to counter threats from China . According to reports, Japan hopes to develop lots of cheap, long-range weapons that can overwhelm any potential rival in the future.

So, instead of fielding, say, ten very expensive missiles, this new strategy would see 1,000+ drones and low-cost missiles used instead. This will include other assets like submarine-launched drones, aircraft-launched drone swarms, too, all under the umbrella of an “integrated attack” plan. This is interesting as it is yet another sign that the nation appears to be moving away from its now 80-year-long dedication to strictly defensive military posturing. It is also indicative of growing military thought whereby quantity might well trump quality under certain circumstances; think Ukraine and the Middle East. In case you are unaware, kamikaze loitering drones/munitions are basically small drones able to fly long distances. Named after the infamous Japanese suicide pilots of World War II, these kinds of drones can actively hunt for targets, track them, and then ram into them, detonating their explosive payloads. Japan’s kamikaze returnExamples of them include the now-infamous Iranian Shahed-136, America’s Switchblade drones, and Russia’s “Lancet” drones. Such weapon systems are cheap, hard to stop, and have proven very effective. And cost really is this kind of weapon’s unique selling point. While prices do vary, a good rule of thumb is around $35,000 for a decent kamikaze drone. That is significantly cheaper than something like a cruise missile that can cost in excess of $1M apiece. So, for the price of a single cruise missile, you could buy 28-30 drones instead. When used in large numbers, such drones could, in theory, overwhelm air defenses. As for the reported 621-mile range, this is important as that would put places like Shanghai or Taiwan within range of mainland Japan. That would give Japan some very credible counter-strike capabilities if push came to shove. This should act as a very powerful deterrent if China decides to attack Japan or its allies. But that is only part of the plan. The concept of integrated attack really is the keystone of the strategy. In effect, this would see Japan sending swarms of cheap drones first during a strike. The best form of defense is attackThese would, in theory, overwhelm and degrade radar and air defenses, paving the way for a follow-up strike using missiles to hit key targets. But that’s just the beginning of the story. Japan is also reportedly planning the use of submarine-launched drones, surface sea drones, and other submersible drones, too. This is a more sophisticated take on the idea of a sautration attack as such systems are much harder to detect. They can also be used to add extra angles of attack, making defensive actions even more difficult than they would be. Japan is also planning on upgrading it more conventional “premium” strike capabilities too.According to reports, Japan wants to upgrade its fleet of surface ships with 1-1000-mile range Tomahawk cruise missiles. If achieved, this would provide its fleet with the capability to also directly threaten mainland China and other regional players like North Korea.
