This LGM will be powered by millions of scans collected from players' smartphones as they explore the world through Niantic 's games and the Scaniverse platform.
Niantic envisions this AI model as a transformative tool, enabling computers and robots to perceive and interact with the world in novel and sophisticated ways.The LGM's spatial intelligence stems from Niantic's Visual Positioning System (VPS), a neural network-based technology that uses a single image from a phone to determine its precise location and orientation. VPS relies on a 3D map constructed from user-generated scans of interesting locations within Niantic's games and the Scaniverse. Notably, this data offers a unique perspective – it's captured from a pedestrian viewpoint and encompasses areas inaccessible to vehicles.Niantic Chief Scientist Victor Prisacariu elaborated on the LGM's capabilities in a 2022 Q&A, stating that the company has built high-fidelity 3D maps of the world using data uploaded by users playing games like Ingress and Pokémon Go.
