DHS Lifts Restrictions on ICE Arrests Near Sensitive Locations, Sparking Community Concerns
IMMIGRATIONICEDHS

The Department of Homeland Security's decision to remove policies limiting ICE arrests near schools, hospitals, and churches has raised concerns about increased enforcement presence in these areas. Community leaders and immigration experts emphasize the importance of legal safeguards and due process.

The Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) announced the removal of policies that previously restricted Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) agents' ability to arrest undocumented individuals near schools, hospitals, and churches. This move has sparked concern and debate within communities, with some expressing fear about the potential for increased ICE presence in sensitive locations.

Avila, the director of House of Grace, a faith-based organization serving the immigrant community, emphasizes the importance of accurate information and factual understanding. He states that the new wave of information regarding ICE activity has fueled anxiety and fear among their members. Avila assures that House of Grace will cooperate with law enforcement within the bounds of the law and will request warrants if ICE agents attempt to enter their premises without proper legal authorization.Immigration law experts, such as Dubove, who has over 30 years of experience in immigration matters, reiterate the fundamental principle that ICE agents require warrants to enter private spaces, including places of worship. They cannot conduct raids or arrests without probable cause, an arrest warrant, or a search warrant. Dubove clarifies that ICE operates similarly to the police, bound by the same legal constraints. He also refutes claims that ICE routinely targets churches or schools for immigration enforcement, stating that such scenarios are extremely rare
