The Israeli military might have violated international rules of war since the earliest portions of it's war against Hamas

FILE - Palestinians help a wounded man after Israel i strikes in Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza Strip , on June 8, 2024. Israel may have violated laws of war during several attacks in its conflict against Hamas , leading to numerous deaths and destruction in the Gaza Strip , according to a new report released by the United Nations Human Rights Office on Wednesday.

The report outlined six attacks on civilian areas between Oct. 9 and Dec. 9, 2023, by the Israeli Defense Force that involved large explosives and led to roughly 218 civilian deaths and massive amounts of destruction. U.N. officials said the IDF likely used 250 to 2,000-pound bombs in all six of the attacks, targeting locations reported by Israel as key Hamas sites, one of which was an "underground terror infrastructure" under the Jabalya Refugee Camp resulting in the deaths of 56 men, women, and children. Of the six attacks under review, five were unannounced, according to the U.N. report. Several of the attacks mentioned in the report were not initially shared publicly by Israeli officials or did not initially disclose damages or deaths of Palestinians.Israel has received international scrutiny in recent months over a seeming failure to "effectively distinguish between civilians and fighters" during its bombing strikes in the ongoing war, which has killed more than 37,200 Palestinians and left countless others sinking food or under the rubble of hospitals, homes, and schools, according to the U.N. “The requirement to select means and methods of warfare that avoid or at the very least minimise to every extent civilian harm appears to have been consistently violated in Israel’s bombing campaign," said High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk in a statement. "Civilian lives and infrastructure are protected under IHL. This law lays out the very clear obligations of parties to armed conflicts that make protection of civilians a priority.” Back in January, the U.N.'s highest court ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any "acts of genocide" in Gaza, according to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other IDF leaders previously said they were making efforts to mitigate the damages of the conflict. Netanyahu, who recently disbanded his war cabinet, also criticized the U.S. for not supplying bombs and other weapons quickly enough to continue their campaign and free hostages within Hamas custody.
