The City of Gulf Shores is launching Reimagine Kids Park, a community-led initiative to redesign the playground at Johnnie Sims Park. The project will incorporate community input to create a modern and safe play space.
The City of Gulf Shores is thrilled to announce the launch of Reimagine Kids Park , a community-driven initiative dedicated to revitalizing the beloved wooden playground at Johnnie Sims Park. Originally constructed in 1996 through an extraordinary community effort in collaboration with Leathers & Associates, the playground has served generations of children.
Despite consistent care, regular inspections, and numerous repairs over the decades, the existing structure has reached the end of its functional lifespan. Recognizing the deep emotional connection residents have to the original design's unique charm and character, the City is committed to undertaking a full redesign that honors the park's historical spirit while simultaneously crafting a modern, safe, and imaginative play space that meets the needs of today's children. This project represents more than just a playground renovation; it's a testament to the community's values and dedication to creating a vibrant space for future generations to flourish. The City is looking forward to the collaborative process that will bring this vision to life.\Leathers & Associates, the original designers, will spearhead the design process beginning this spring, bringing their expertise to the project. They will work closely with the community to ensure the new playground reflects the desires and aspirations of those who will use it most: families, students, and all community members. As part of this vital community-driven design phase, the City is enthusiastically inviting the public to participate in a family-friendly engagement event called Come Play with Us!. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and will be held at the existing Kids Park located in Johnnie Sims Park. The event promises a fun-filled experience for children, including a dedicated drawing station where young participants can unleash their creativity and share their vision of a “dream park.” Adults will be given the opportunity to complete a brief survey, providing valuable input on desired features and setting priorities for the new playground. The festivities will also include music, face painting, engaging games, refreshing snow cones, and sweet cotton candy, guaranteeing a joyful and memorable experience for everyone. This ensures that the design reflects the needs and desires of the community ensuring all those involved will be engaged from the beginning.\“This is truly a community-driven project,” emphasized Grant Brown, Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs. “We are aiming to create a park that resonates with the creativity and unique needs of our families. This event provides a valuable platform for everyone to share their ideas and contribute to the vision. The input we receive will be pivotal in shaping a space that our children will cherish and enjoy for many years to come.” For residents who are unable to attend the in-person event, the City is providing an online town hall platform, ensuring all residents have a voice in the process. Through this platform, residents can complete surveys, view design previews, and submit questions or comments, ensuring that everyone can provide input from anywhere. This multifaceted approach is a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness, guaranteeing all voices are heard during the playground's transformation. The City is committed to building a space designed by and for the community, ensuring it will be a source of joy and recreation for years to come. The playground redesign is more than just a project; it's an opportunity for the community to come together, contribute their ideas, and build a lasting legacy for the children of Gulf Shores
