A group of armed bandits attacked a girls' boarding school in Kebbi State, Nigeria, killing a staff member and abducting 25 students. This marks the first major school abduction since March 2024, raising concerns about the security of schools in northern Nigeria.
On Monday, reports emerged detailing a harrowing attack on a girls' boarding school in Kebbi state, Nigeria . A group of armed individuals, described as bandits, stormed the school premises, resulting in the death of a staff member and the abduction of 25 students. According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred around 5:00 a.m. local time, with the attackers encountering minimal resistance.
The slain staff member, initially reported as the school principal, was later confirmed to be the vice principal. He reportedly died while attempting to protect the students from the abductors, a loss deeply mourned by the community. Local police confirmed the assault and stated that they dispatched tactical units to engage the suspected bandits. However, the heavily armed attackers were able to evade capture and escape with their captives.\Reports indicate that the bandits arrived in significant numbers, wielding advanced weaponry. Police officials revealed that Commissioner Bello Sani is actively working to ensure the safety of the abducted students and to bring an end to the ongoing threat. Senator Umar Tafida, the deputy governor of Kebbi state, is reportedly on his way to Maga, the location of the attack, to assess the situation firsthand. Authorities expressed bewilderment regarding how the attackers managed to breach the school's perimeter, successfully kidnap the students, and subsequently escape despite the presence of several military checkpoints in the vicinity, one of which is situated less than a kilometer from the school. A local community leader alleged that military forces were alerted about a potential attack but inexplicably withdrew, leaving police officers to manage the situation.\This incident marks the first major school abduction since March 2024, when over 200 pupils were seized from a school in Kuriga, Kaduna state. Over the past decade, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, often driven by motives such as ransom demands or strategic leverage with the government. These groups vary in their affiliations, ranging from criminal gangs seeking financial gain to jihadi terrorists associated with groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province ISWAP. The ongoing crisis evokes memories of the devastating 2014 Chibok girls' school raid, where nearly 300 young women were abducted, with over 90 still unaccounted for. Those who were rescued reported being forced into marriage and conversion to Islam. The Nigerian government has faced persistent criticism for its perceived inadequate efforts to rescue the abducted girls. A local intelligence source working with the State Security Services suggested that the Maga kidnapping could be the work of either Dogo Gide or Falando, both notorious bandit groups. Dogo Gide's group is known to have ties with jihadi groups, while Falando's faction is recognized for its extensive kidnapping operations. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria HURIWA has called upon security institutions to immediately take action to rescue the hostages, arrest or eliminate the perpetrators, and bring them to justice. HURIWA further urged the government to implement robust security and intelligence gathering measures nationwide to prevent future incidents, highlighting the government's substantial investment in school security, despite the persistent vulnerability to such attacks
