The last week of school means awards ceremonies, field days and more. For Laquanna Spriggs, this means end-of-the-year projects.

She teaches civics and geography at Johnnie Carr Middle School , a school named after a Civil Rights leader in Montgomery and a key figure in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Carr later led the Montgomery Improvement Association until her death in 2008. It was this rich history that got Spriggs to move to Montgomery from Greenville, Mississippi, a few years ago with her son, who is now 15 and in high school.

“Because it’s a historical city to me and I like history. I decided to move my son here, somewhere out of the area where we’re from,” Spriggs said.

“So many movements started right here in Montgomery. ” Spriggs, who attended Mississippi Valley State University, taught in Greenville, Mississippi, for four years before relocating. She has been teaching for eight years total and admits teaching middle school comes with challenges.

“Middle school, they’re still trying to adjust themselves, trying to find themselves. So, it’s a little intimidating sometimes, but then, some days it’s terrific,” she said.

“Make sure your kids get a good education and gain some knowledge, move on to the next step,” Spriggs said. As the school year winds down, Spriggs assigned end-of-the-year projects focused on humans and the environment, specifically the Eastern Seaboard. Spriggs said she wants her students to focus on reading over the summer months to stay sharp for the next school year.
