The celebrated actor Jack Shepherd, known for his role in Wycliffe, bequeathed his entire fortune to his second wife, Ann Scott, following his death at 85. Shepherd's career spanned television, theatre, and music, earning him numerous accolades, including an Olivier Award. His family and the entertainment industry mourn his loss.
The late actor Jack Shepherd , best known for his role as Detective Charles Wycliffe in the popular ITV series Wycliffe , left a substantial estate of £977,511 to his second wife, Ann Scott, following his passing at the age of 85 last year.
According to reports from The Sun, Shepherd, who married Ann in 1975, bequeathed his entire fortune to her, ensuring financial security for his surviving family, which includes his wife and their five children: Jan, Jake, Victoria, Catherine, and Ben. Shepherd, a Leeds-born actor, rose to fame in the 1990s for his portrayal of the Cornish detective in the crime drama based on the WJ Burley novels.
The series, which aired from 1993 to 1998, also featured Scottish actor Jimmy Yuill as DI Doug Kersey and Helen Masters as DI Lucy Lane. Shepherd's agents at Markham, Froggatt & Irwin confirmed his death in a statement, revealing that he passed away peacefully in hospital after a brief illness, with his wife and family by his side.
They expressed deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as a celebrated actor whose career spanned decades and left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Born in Leeds, Shepherd initially pursued fine art, earning a scholarship to Newcastle University before moving to London to study at The Central School for Speech and Drama. His early career saw him become a prominent figure at London's Royal Court Theatre, where he gained recognition for his talent and versatility.
In the 1970s, he achieved further acclaim for his role as the rebellious Labour MP Bill Brand in the hit series of the same name, which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in 1977. Beyond television, Shepherd was a highly respected stage actor, performing at the National Theatre and directing productions such as The Two Gentlemen of Verona at Shakespeare's Globe in 1996, which later toured Broadway.
His contributions to theatre were widely recognized, including an Olivier Award for his performance in the original production of Glengarry Glen Ross in 1983. Shepherd also collaborated frequently with director Bill Bryden on various theatrical projects and was a playwright in his own right.
In addition to his acting and directing career, Shepherd was a talented musician, playing the saxophone and jazz piano. His multifaceted career and enduring legacy have left a lasting impact on British entertainment, and his passing is mourned by fans and colleagues alike
