- ROME, SEP 6 - The proposed separation of the career paths of magistrates so judges and prosecutors can no longer switch from one side to the other could be a step towards "political control" of the public prosecution, magistrates union ANM President Giuseppe Santalucia said on Wednesday.
Santalucia told the Lower House Constitutional Affairs Committee that measures contained in the bills under examination "diminished" the current obligatory nature of prosecution in the face of a suspected crime and that this could be a prelude to subjecting prosecutors to"political control". The ANM chief said that the fact that magistrates currently follow the same career path is a guarantee of disinterest by the prosecution in the outcome of a trial.
"I believe that it is a step that will change the structure not only of the prosecution, but of the entire democratic system of the country," he said. .
