Rochester, N.Y. — A man charged with attempted murder and assault as a hate crime for an attack that seriously injured a hiker on a Perinton trail last year rejected a plea deal Thursday. Derrick Van Epps stabbed Dylan Ghaemi multiple times with a hunting knife June 23 on the Indian Hill Trail, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
The rejection of the plea deal means Van Epps, 31, of Palmyra will go to trial and could face a longer sentence if convicted. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday. An out-of-state man has been charged for planting a tracker one someone's vehicle in Steuben County, according to the Bath Village Police Department. A woman faces charges after she stabbed her former manager at a pizza shop Wednesday, according to the Greece Police Department.
