When Wicklow woman Rita Fitzpatrick turned 85, her daughter Sam told her they were going to celebrate with a nice day out in Dublin. Rita had pictured some leisurely shopping, maybe afternoon tea - but instead, she came home with a tattoo.
While Rita and Sam were strolling around the city centre, Sam told her mother she had to pop into the Ink Factory, a nearby tattoo studio, to get something. “When she told me what it was for, of course I had to do it,” she said. “I know there’s a problem with mental health services being underfunded in Ireland, so I thought it would be a good thing to do to help.”“It didn’t hurt at all, it was done before I knew it. It was just a little prickle!“A year later and it’s still holding up, it hasn’t faded or anything,” she said.
“When I got home, people were stopping me at Mass saying they heard I got a tattoo and asking to see it,” she laughs.
what if she doesn't like it when she grows up?
