Mickey Harte taking charge of the Derry footballers is arguably the most audacious managerial appointment in GAA history.
But, then, that list was decidedly short, particularly with Derry seeking an elite manager to take them those last couple of steps to an All-Ireland title. Brian McIver, another Tyrone man, also managed Derry but he was a long-time resident of the county and was immersed in its football scene. O’Mahony’s Galway dethroned Mayo as Connacht champions in his first Championship game in 1998 en route to the county’s first All-Ireland in 32 years. He won another with them three years later and a subsequent return to the Mayo post fell short of expectations. The former Mayo full-back succeeded O’Mahony in Galway in 2004 though the path had been well trodden for him by his predecessor. Similar to O’Mahony, he had already managed one of the province’s lesser lights, having taken charge of Sligo.
He was well versed in Down football having enjoyed success on the club scene with Mayobridge and Kilcoo and he made an immediate impression with the county team, winning promotion to Division One.
