May is an explosion in the garden. It’s when summer begins, and plants are growing at an extraordinary rate, here Diarmuid Gavin shares his top jobs to do this month

We have entered a new month and there are high hopes May will be much sunnier and drier than April so we can start to make the most of the summer with beach days, barbeques and garden gatherings.

"But daylight is on your side and by the end of the month the long summer evenings confirm that summer is here. The old reliables come to the fore - lupins, aquilegia and a host of early-summer plants put on spectacular displays, and the green garden of April suddenly pops with colour. "The Chelsea chop is a technique you can practise in your own garden in late May. It’s a way of cutting back herbaceous and perennial plants to make them bushier and to get them to flower slightly later. It can be good for plans that get leggy later in the year.

Diarmuid is also encouraging us to take part in ' No Mow May ' a campaign to give your lawn over to wildlife for the month of May.
