The increases in social welfare payments are unlikely to dip below last year’s €12 weekly increase, the Irish Mirror understands.
Budget negotiations continue this weekend as many sources indicated that discussions could go right to the wire. The leaders will meet on Sunday evening and it is expected that much of the October 10 announcement will be signed off by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, Finance Minister Michael McGrath and Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe then.
The Irish Mirror now understands that social welfare increases are unlikely to fall below the €12 a week announced by Minister Humphreys last year.It is also expected that there will be a number of one-off lump sum payments.Speaking at the Tidy Towns award ceremony in Croke Park on Friday evening, Minister Humphreys gave no information away and insisted that negotiations will continue over the weekend.
Minister Humphreys also hit out at Sinn Féin’s alternative budget proposals. In their alternative budget unveiled on Wednesday, they proposed €15 increases to social welfare and pensioners living alone. Pensioners not living alone would receive a €10 boost.
