Irish internationals James Conroy and Neil Hoey speak to Mirror Sport about amputee football and Bohs' Champions League adventure in Spain this weekend

Victory in tomorrow’s FAI Cup final would secure European football for Bohemians, but one section of the club is already there.

Here in Ireland, there are only three teams in the entire league - Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers and Cork City.Flamencos of Spain, Italian outfit Sporting, Wisła Kraków of Poland and Dila Gori of Georgia contest the other group. When Bohs established an amputee team in 2018, Conroy - the goalkeeper - was told they would be as important as the first-team.“It’s not cheap to send us to the Champions League, but the club has done everything to help,” said the Navan man.

But there’s no mistaking Hoey’s dedication to his sport, having become one of the country’s most important players, some 13 years after losing a leg to cancer. “I was like a baked potato out there! But I never missed out on anything and had a really supportive family and friends. Another is an Irishman based in Newcastle in England and Conroy said: “Training is hard with the geographical distances but technology is playing a big part.

Conroy said: “I was expecting it to be rolling the ball to each other and then pat each other on the head and say ‘we're great’. Conroy tells the story of a player who lost his leg in a work accident and initially refused to wear shorts on holidays. But Conroy said: “Then he started playing amputee football and now loves the fact he's an amputee, he's proud of it and wears his shorts everywhere. It hasn't ruined his life.

"You're surrounded by people who are thriving personally, professionally and in sport. You just happen to be missing a limb.”
