The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has delivered a stunning denunciation of her treatment during a summit meeting in Turkey where she was denied a chair when meeting President Erdogan alongside EC President Charles Michel

Ms von der Leyen said she felt "hurt" and "alone" and could reach no other conclusion than that the incident occurred because she was a woman.

"I cannot find any justification for how I was treated in any European Treaties, so I have to conclude that it happened because I am a woman. Would this have happened if I had worn a suit and a tie? President von der Leyen acknowledged that she was in a privileged position and could raise her voice as the leader of what she described as a "highly respected" institution. President von der Leyen said it was a "terrible signal" that Turkey, a founding member of the 47-member human rights organisation, was withdrawing from the Treaty, which President Erdogan announced in March.

Turkey is a 2nd world country with a 1st world military and 3rd world attitude towards women and non Turks. They are not an economic powerhouse. They contribute little on the world stage, and have a president who models himself on Vladimir. A dangerous narcissist.

Disgraceful behaviour to any woman but particularly to such an important person as UrsulavonderLeyen

It is totally disgraceful behaviour by a head of state in the 21st century. And I agree wholeheartedly that this is a sign of continuing disrespect and disregard of women in some cultures. We have a Kong road to travel yet

EU Council president should have shown solidarity with EU President and refused to sit with Turkish President until she had a seat at the top of the room too. He showed poor character, as to ignore what occurred is to accept it, he should be called to account.

That us shocking treatment

Charles Michel is a plonker. VonDerLeyen has every right to feel insulted and I hope she continues to speak out on this issue.

Islam

BrigidLaffan Shame on Charles Michel. How could he still sit there next to the dictator Erdoğan and allow Von der Leyen to be humiliated like that?

Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians were in those Geographic Regions for Thousands of years. All were massacred by Turks. Turks did not create anything and whatever they acquired they achieved it by looting in predatory wars. Turks have no history, they have a criminal record !

This has nothing to do with her being a woman. Lack of chair is no mistake either. Erdogan like Putin, likes to do those little things to remind the west who's the boss in his own house. EU - Turkey relations aren't great. Erdogan doesn't care about PC. DYOR

This is unbelievable!

Unsurprising behaviour by Turkey and it's president it is a deeply misogynistic society. The EU Council president Michel acted equally disgracefully and he showed his misogny equally. Urusla Von Leyen would wipe the floor with both of them on every level.

Turkey treats women like dirt; this is nothing new, just the same sexist's behaviour from a neandertal people of the area.

And she was right! Good for her for speaking up!!!!

The incident occurred because Erdogan is a misogynist.

She was treated appallingly. She’s dead right to make a stand and speak up.

In Islam women are treated differently. That's it.

So glad she's not let it drop. It needs powerful women to take up obvious slights like this.

Muslums think nothing of women and they showed it to the world

Yet the eu continues to flood every European country with men from a certain culture 🤔

What was that long streak of piss doing taking the other seat, he should have been offering it to her. There’s a pair of them at it here

Sexism.... couldn’t be any other reason 😂

And that is why we don’t let turkey join the EU .. move on

When one of the most powerful women in the world is claiming victimhood we have truly reached 🤡🌍 Like there's no other reason they wanted to let her know there was little respect there?

The Horror

Let's hope Ursula vonderleyen has more sympathy for the Debenhams worker women than rte does. But alas, I'd say she is also firmly on the side of the gardai who attacked them.

The incident was obviously a crude power-play by Turkey. The reason for it is anyone's guess.

Turkey will never be admitted to the EU .... thankfully

A flagrant affront to All EU citizens and the democracy we hold dear.Shame on you Turkey. If you weren’t a strategic member of the now questionable NATO,you would be way out further in the cold.

“In general, the protocol for third countries makes a CLEAR distinction between the status of head of state, held by the president of the European Council, and the status of prime minister, held by the president of the Commission” - Head of Protocol European Union

For some reason, I thought this was relevant.

Turkey 1900 25% Christian Turkey 2021 0.2% Christian Turkey is a brutal Islamic dictatorship and what happened here was about playing to erdogans hardline audience - Europe news to wake up the the threats turkey poses

Maybe they only give chairs to elected Presidents..?

The only good to come out of this is hopefully it will put back their application to join the EU for decades. This dictator's treatment of women, Christians and minorities is a disgrace

Go on Ursula!!

It was wrong.

It was in turkey. Zero surprise here.

now you know how women feel having to do mandatory hotel quarantine in Ireland , there outcasts

That’s an absolute joke and those of us who comprise the European Union should not let something like this.. um.. stand.

There's another man on a sofa too. What a sad non story.

She is not the EU head of state, Michel is. The two heads of state sat together, she sat with her Turkish equivalent.

'I felt hurt, and I felt alone, as a woman, and as a European.' vonderleyen 🇪🇺✊ It's important that good men remember to stand up in solidarity with women, because too many of the other type still don't.

Bit of a delayed reaction, better late than never. EU need to deal firmly with that dictator.

Poor behaviour from Turkey, but can't imagine two 'presidents' turning up to speak to the EU from a single nation state. The whole idea is that the pres is head of state. Can't be more than one of 'em...

EU Council President didn’t exactly cover himself in glory either..He subsequently complained he couldn’t sleep, probably his BACKBONE!

But she sat on a beautiful couch. I wonder would it be the same outrage if the man had to sit on the couch

high time that Turkey is viewed as a pariah

The EU has four Presidents. It is no wonder there are too few seats. By the way her position is apparently the fourth most important of the four.

Terrible treatment but not surprised, she should have just told them to stick it, crepits

Charles Michel is a women hater and a coward. He should resign, being ar the wrong side of history

CharlesMichel traitement honteux

So now we also know EC President Charles Michel is no gentleman either.

Rte has turned into the propoganda ministry for the Eu commission.

Turkey pissing off everyone lately. Biden just sent a big fuck you to Erdogan too.

It’s shocking behaviour by The Belgian. I’m not than surprised by the Turkish man. vonderleyen

she is big lier .. There are 101 women politicians in the Turksh parliament. Have accurate information about my country.

It’s called equality

rubycooper007 GOOD FOR HER!

Did she not know where the exit was? She should have had more self respect than to accept such treatment!

I'd have *power-posed* between the two with my hands on the back of each chair. Either that, or stand 6ft in front like a boss. You can't teach un-thinking people how to not be misogynistic, but you can play them at their own (infantile) game.

Hurt? Angry as hell more like, and quite right too.

I'd hazard a guess that this won't improve Turkey's accession hopes...

Imagine what Turkish women feel daily.

another privileged liberal with no real world problems

She got a massive plush couch FFS, FOR HER HUGE ASS 😆 vonderleyen

That’s what you get when you pretend your an actual nation ...

ThomasKearns12 😲🤔

Everyone knows Erdogan is a shit, but that doesn't explain why didn't Michel protest...

There are men, women & children denied basic human rights across the world. Fuck your chair. 🙄

'I felt alone as a woman': von der Leyen says Turkey chair controversy wouldn't have happened to a man'I felt alone as a woman': von der Leyen suggests 'sofagate' controversy wouldn't have happened to a man I'm sure her cold heart ached 😂 So that is how she represents Europe? As a weak and summis continent, surrendered to Islam imposed to europeans by force...? ¡What a shame! One of the most 'powerful' women in the world not knowing how to show strength when most necessarily... She does not deserves her position. Not overly fond of either.
