There is also another sense in which Hong Kong is not what it used to be, and the change can be measured in numbers. For the past half-century, at least, the territory was the pre-eminent financial centre in Asia. It maintained that status even as Tokyo and Singapore rose to challenge it. As I wrote in 2020, Hong Kong thrived because it was more open than Tokyo, less uptight than Singapore, and more welcoming of expatriate residents than either of them.
In particular, Aguzin was unable to stop the slow decline in trading on the exchange and of initial public offerings from China on which the Hong Kong market recently thrived. The value of share-trading on the exchange tumbled to just HK$80 billion a day in the fourth quarter of 2023, nearly a third lower than it was a year ago.
