Vigils take place in Ireland and UK for Ashling Murphy

Ms Murphy was attacked and killed on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly, on Wednesday afternoon.

In Ms Murphy's native Co Offaly, two walks took place this morning along the Grand Canal in Rhode and Edenderry, in her memory. The former Socialist TD and ROSA activist Ruth Coppinger said the public reaction to Ashling Murphy's death was unprecedented and that groups across society now must come together to decide how to take action.A huge crowd gathered in London this afternoon in solidarity with the family and friends of Ms Murphy.

The vigil took place at around 4pm - the time at which gardaí said the fatal assault occurred on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore. Her father had played the tune on the banjo in tribute to his youngest daughter at a vigil yesterday near the scene of her murder.

There was another young teacher murdered in London, around the same time as SarahEverard . I don't remember her name. Only that she wasn't white. Black women & women of colour, don't get the same publicity as white murder victims like AshlingMurphy. Nor as many vigils.

I am so sorry for the girl and her family vigils are a great idea But I was at one yesterday very nice and sad But the amount of councillors and other politicians jumping in front of cameras for publicity would turn your stomach RIP Ashing very sad
