Varadkar and Martin set to begin 'exploratory' talks

The leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin, are expected to meet later today for exploratory talks.

Yesterday, Mr Varadkar said talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil this week are "just exploratory discussions" and do not signal a change in approach by his party to government formation. However, the outcome of the discussions could give an indication of the direction of government formation talks in the weeks ahead.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald claimed that the political establishment was trying to stop change.
