US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have said that their countries would close their border to "non-essential traffic," while New York City moved nearer to ordering residents to stay home as the United States struggled to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Many people have lost jobs with numerous businesses closing during the crisis even as the Trump administration works with Congress to approve economic stimulus legislation. Mr Trudeau told reporters at a news conference in Ottawa that he spoke with Trump and they agreed to restrict non-essential travel across the border.
In a fresh study, the International Labour Organization warned that the economic and labour crisis sparked by the spread of the new coronavirus will have "far-reaching impacts on labour market outcomes". At the high-end meanwhile, 24.7 million more people will become jobless, on top of the 188 million registered as unemployed in 2019, the study found.
