Ukrainian refugee buried after failed search for family

Yevhen Mishchenko died alone on 2 January in his flat in Main Street, Skibbereen, having left Mariupol shortly after Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine last year.Gardaí attempted to track down relatives in Mariupol but they could not find any family.

Mr O'Connell said that Mr Mishchenko was"very much alone" in Ireland and that nobody knows if was married or had children. He said that the Department of Social Protection paid for the burial and that it is possible that this could happen again.

“Mr Mishchenko’s burial was attended by Skibbereen parish priest Fr John Heinhold, along with local undertakers and grave diggers” This is the tragedy in all of this…

Passing alone in a foreign country at his age is heartbreaking. May he rest in peace 🕊️

Knowing who is in our country is essential

Although sad, how is this newsworthy? The gentleman obviously had no desire to contact his family. I don't recall the elderly who died without family at their side during Covid, receiving this attention.

That's very sad. We need to support all our Ukrainian brothers and sisters.

Why would he hide who he was or his family? Ok maybe he didn't have any family left but surely to god he would have at least told the interpreter that,what had he to hide by not saying if or if he had no family left, unless he wasn't really who he let on to be!😳

Rte or maybe because of nato prozy war with Russia which began with the EU and American overthrowing the democratic elected government in 2014 and installing there own which began to attack the people in the east killing thousands of people

Didn't this all start when the Ukrainian government were overthrown in a western organised coup that installed anti russian,pro fascist government that forbade citizens speaking russian. This started long before the US/EU organised maidan murders

You could report on what's really happening now in Ireland instead of this rubbish..nobody cares about Ukraine I think Ireland have enough issues right now..you jokers
